The Artful Visage
In this piece, titled 'The Artful Visage', I sought to capture the elegance of a human profile and the captivating power of contrast. The subject is rendered in charcoal with dramatic light and shadow that both sculpt her features and create a sense of mystery. The bold, decorative lines on her face are deliberately set against a highly rendered background and her meticulous gaze, creating a striking visual narrative.
This artwork was a study inspired by a reference photo from Jerney Marisha's class. Where the instructor used the image to influence a painting in a book, I chose to apply it in a different way, using my preferred medium to focus on the interplay of light and texture. The stunning contrast of the original black and white photograph immediately spoke to me, and it was a pleasure to translate that into a charcoal drawing.
In doing so, I’ve realized a new stage in my artistic journey—I’m increasingly choosing studies based purely on the reference image that interests me, a sign that my own taste is developing. My next creative challenge is to take this one step further by creating and working from my own reference photos.
