Ebony & Pearl
In this piece, aptly titled "Ebony & Pearl", I aimed to capture the timeless beauty of the human form through the powerful simplicity of black and white. Using charcoal, I focused on rendering the intricate features of the subject's face, allowing the interplay of deep shadows and luminous highlights to define her expression and form. The contrast, for me, is the true subject here, enhancing the delicate nuances that might otherwise be lost in colour.
This artwork was inspired by a reference photograph from Danielle Mack's "Let’s Face It" class. While Danielle’s approach with the original colour image led to a very different result, I was immediately struck by the woman's inherent beauty and felt compelled to translate her features into the high-contrast world of charcoal. This recent practice of selecting "Let's Face It" classes purely based on the reference image that captivates me has, I've noticed, become a significant way to develop my artistic taste.
While I'm eager to eventually create my own reference images through photography, I recognise the value of continued practice. For now, I'm relishing the learning opportunities provided by this course, allowing each intriguing image to further refine my technique and artistic vision.
