A surprise 90th Birthday gift for my mother who still inspires me by avidly walking every day! This drawing is in Graphite, using 2H, H, B, 2B, 4B & 8B leads. I also used Mars Lumograph pencils in 2B, 4B & 6B to create the shirt. No special paper, an A3 sketch pad that I bought to study with and this drawing became my 3rd original piece of artwork.
Creating artwork in a photorealistic style brought about a new dilemma with this portrait as I wanted to be authentic with my depiction but at the same time be respectful and try to flatter my subject, even though she had just turned 90 years old. I was nervous to present it to her but all that faded immediately I saw her face when she opened it and was delighted with the piece, which now hangs in her lounge.
