Introspection
In this piece, titled "Introspection", I wanted to capture the profound beauty found in moments of quiet reflection. The portrait, rendered in a striking combination of black, white, and sepia charcoal, portrays a figure lost in thought. The deliberate use of light and shadow sculpts the face and hand, inviting the viewer to focus on the soft curves and delicate planes. The choice to add warm, sepia tones around the eyes adds a sense of warmth and depth, elevating the drawing from a simple study to a piece with a more profound emotional weight.
This artwork was a challenging but rewarding study from Natalie Eslick's lesson within the "Lets Face It" program. Natalie's methodical approach to constructing facial angles was enlightening and, at times, more difficult than it looked! While Natalies original piece used coloured pencils, I chose to adapt the technique using my charcoal and new sepia pencils, creating a fantastic learning curve for me. I'm incredibly proud of the result, which is now my favourite piece from the program and holds a special place hanging in my lounge.
The process of creating this work helped me understand the power and flexibility of my chosen mediums in a new way. It stands as a testament to the fact that with dedication and a willingness to explore, a single study can become a deeply personal work of art.
