"Closer Than We Think" was one of the first chimpanzee portraits in my Primate Collection, inspired by another photograph my husband took during a visit to Chester Zoo.
I struggled to find the right title for this piece. Then, as I was writing the description, the words "Closer Than We Think" suddenly seemed to fit perfectly. Perhaps that connection is because of our shared evolutionary history, and it is one of the reasons I feel these incredible animals deserve our respect and protection.
Dr. Jane Goodall famously highlighted just how much chimpanzees are like us, reminding us that they are much more like us than we realise. Looking at this portrait, I think it’s easy to see why.
