About this artwork

"The Secret Garden" was inspired by a photograph taken by a friend of her young daughter, dressed in a fairy dress and wandering through a beautiful garden. There was something almost magical about the image & the garden truly felt like a secret place, where anything might be possible!

The piece explores that wonderful space between reality and imagination that comes so naturally to children. A garden can become a kingdom, a path can lead somewhere mysterious, and an ordinary moment can become an adventure.

Perhaps what makes this scene so enchanting is that, although we experience the world differently as adults, we still recognise that feeling. It reminds us of the imagination we once had so freely as children, and of the stories and possibilities that could exist just beyond the everyday.

Through "The Secret Garden" I wanted to capture not simply a little girl walking through a garden, but that fleeting sense of wonder and the feeling that, for a moment, you have discovered somewhere secret and magical!
