Industry on a Rough Shoreline sets human endeavour against the raw indifference of nature — and nature is winning. Two skeletal industrial structures stand marooned on the left, dwarfed by a churning, turbulent foreground of purple, amber, and white that surges and breaks like a sea in storm. Above, a blazing sky of molten gold and orange sweeps in from the right, its warmth at once beautiful and ominous — a sunset or a conflagration.
The middle ground is a collision of grey and white — wave, smoke, or eroded land — rendered with thick, gestural strokes that convey both physical force and a sense of things being worn away. The industrial forms, fragile and vertical against the horizontal sweep of sky and sea, read as monuments to a fading presence.
There is something elegiac about Industry on a Rough Shoreline — a meditation on impermanence, the tension between the built and the natural world, and the sublime indifference of weather and tide.
