About this artwork

This was the second picture of 4 I made during the Pintar Rapido on 22nd June 2019- straight after the bluey one here, and in the same spot, but looking to the left a bit more. I needed to go and buy a drink as I had run out of water and was nearly out of leftover painting water! I used hot-pressed St Cuthbert's Mill Saunders Waterford paper for this and it was very very simple. I poured out my painting water onto the paper, swilled it around with the brush where I wanted it, drew into it a bit with a pencil- this is a lovely way to work, and great if you want "loose" drawing, because you don't really want to touch the paper with your hand as you do it, and if, like me, you are tired and hot and thirsty, it will be very loose indeed! So I just drew and the way I draw is this- a bit of the scene, but if someone walks past, I switch and draw them, and a bit more behind them, and another figure goes by and so you have foreground and background overlapping each other, and it is a nice way to work. And before the ink was dry- and this was part of the plan, I dabbed away to lift much of the ink of in selected areas, to make the sides of the building that the light was touching, and then, whilst it was all still damp, I ran a white pastel around the place where the light hit and where there were things that were contrastingly white or bright- and to bring the shapes of this or that more clearly, and it ended up being a picture I was very happy with. There was just one thing- it would work with a white frame, but was too subtle for the black frames I had brought with me, so I knew I needed- after some lemonade- to go and do some more pictures. Whilst I was doing those in a park, a nice lady came up and bought it, which was fine by me, because by this time I had 2 more that I thought would work with my frames :-)
