In this painting the Dryad is the tree dwelling spirit rather than the tree - woman hybrid. The pose was suggested and adopted by the life model featured in the painting. I tried to make the figure tree like to merge with the background branches and to suggest that she may be in the process of transforming. I had finished the picture when I was amazed to find Jean's poem on the internet, see link below.
