This is a watercolour painting of a photo sent to me by my family when I couldn't go away and they liked this area and I thought this very unique 19th century lighthouse would make a nice painting to remember the holiday. I also used watercolour pencils to produce a calm sea effect. I mainly wanted to experiment with skies in this one and I was focusing on cloud methods and playing with ways of controlling white watercolour pigment. After a few attempts I actually used spit instead of water as I found that spit didn’t run or absorb much into the paper which kept the white from mixing fully with nearby colours and held it in place on the surface of the paper until dry. I liked this result for this painting and also liked the way it pushed the dark pigments to the edges of the clouds and produced a pearlescent outcome.
