This started off as a little cherry blossom tree we grew from seed, unfortunately our little tree didn’t last the second year though I managed to get its first blossom on photo so I decided to make a painting of the blossom bunches it produced and compose them into this cherry blossom branch oil painting and give it a bit of a cold frosty spring feel with a traditional aged look to its branch. I took a heavy impasto approach to many areas of this painting and also a delicate touch to other areas to emphasise the fact that old cherry trees can be simultaneously beautiful and delicate while being of monstrously tough hardwood with rough bark. To me the blossom is a symbol of a fresh new year but even though I love to see the blossom bloom and fall, I find it sad to see it go so soon and instantly look forward to seeing it the next year.
