This is an oil on board painting of a world war one pillbox just off the Acle straight (A47 in Norfolk). I wanted to paint this scene for quite a long while but it is in a very hard to reach place and even quite difficult photograph as it is by a very dangerous long rural road with nowhere to stop. It has a little tree growing from the bottom of the bunker which grew for many years but it has since been removed but along with the horses and cows that roam nearby that use it as shade in summer and the mill in the background I thought it would make a nice picture and felt lucky to have an opportunity to be able to capture it all especially while the tree was there.
There is a lot of marshy uneven grass area that goes on for miles here as it is part of the Norfolk broads and I didn’t want to leave this out as this is significant to the atmosphere and shows this derelict little pillbox that served its country for a brief period over a hundred years ago still standing miles from anywhere.
