About this artwork

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" third in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help. Conan Doyle repeatedly said that Holmes was inspired by the real-life figure of Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, whom Conan Doyle met in 1877 and had worked for as a clerk. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing broad conclusions from minute observations. Perhaps no fictional character ever created has become so charmingly real to his readers. Holmes has inspired a universe of portrayals in books and popular culture, and the detective's legacy can be summed up with the Museum of London's description of him: "The Man Who Never Lived and Will Never Die.
