About this artwork

As a painter, I find my paintings emerge out of my daily experiences. I aim to capture real moments of real people, that others can relate to, whether it’s their story, their journey or who they represent. Exploring this in paint allows me to give the individual their voice and so connecting to the subject of my painting is integral as I believe this permeates into the painting giving the work a richer, more authentic feel.
This painting depicts my father in full Christmas regalia – a typical Christmas sight. He wears three paper crowns from Christmas crackers pulled during the meal. Crowns he has collected after everyone else has discarded theirs, delicately balancing on his head as he drinks from a festive tumbler. He also dons a waistcoat- worn for special occasions- complete with pocket watch and a Christmas decoration peeking out of his pocket.
For me, this painting celebrates everything family, in all their quirkiness and individuality. I believe now more than ever we realise the importance of spending time with loved ones. Through the layers of oil paint, memories captured, time shared and moments celebrated. A painting capturing a unique moment shared by many.
