About this artwork

My most recent collection of work is an expressive study of figurative art. This still expanding body of work aims to capture atmospheric energy through the human form combined with the abstract use of colour.
The colour orange has unknowingly played a significant part in my work as an artist from early paintings through to today. Orange is also prominent in the work of an artist who inspires me, Francis Bacon.
In his paintings Bacon juxtaposes his figures against a stark background, throwing the figure into a space that exists beyond the canvas, distorting the figures, creating tension and a feeling that the figures will come alive at any moment.
I sought to recreate this level of tension in my work, bringing together dance and abstract colour. The images are taken from videos of myself dancing, capturing moments of transition and movement. Juxtaposing this figure against the striking, rich and vibrant orange accent, bringing kinetic energy to the piece.
The orange accent is painted using impasto oil paint, recreating the same energy that was used to create the source images, accentuating the figure. With the energy flowing from one painting to the next through repetitive striking paint marks.
