Originally titled "You Can Keep Your Hat On" the source photograph was taken in November 2022, but it took over two years before I returned to create the artwork. We were experiencing a cold snap of weather. The image, palette and atmosphere all combined.
When entering the artwork for the SAA competition, I referred to "the cool steeliness of the gaze, contrasting with the close proximity of the pose and warmth of the fur hat."
