Working primarily in pastels, I craft portraits and figurative pieces that invite the viewer to pause and think about the characters featured.
I'm an introvert by nature so it's funny that I specialise in portraits. It amuses my wife that someone who is not always the most sociable of individuals, spends so much time thinking about people. But I'm also an inveterate people-watcher - and it is that curiosity which guides my artistic practice.
Portrait as Collaboration:
However, my art practice isn't about observing from afar – it's very much up-close and personal. I’m interested in exploring how people think about themselves – and how that differs from the way others see them. As a result, my process often begins with words – a conversation to explore a subject’s qualities as seen by themselves and those close to them. The artwork flows from there.
A Journey in Art:
Working from my home studio in Kent, I embarked on this artistic journey later in life and I'm largely self-taught.
