I am a sailor.
Approaching a harbour at night in fog is always perilous. This painting is based on my memories of crossing the channel between Dover and Oostende, arriving in the dark after a long passage at sea. The clouds suddenly cleared and the harbour wall was lit by an eerie blue light. For me the blues in this painting are reflective and calm, but also otherworldly and mysterious and the whole painting is held in an intense indigo blue frame.The moon is hidden yet the cold glow provides a backdrop to the mist and fog clearing from the horizon.
