Tanya Lock was born in New Zealand, where her interest in natural history, particularly in birds started. She grew up in a artist’s house where she was able to consistently observe original art work of Ray Ching, and was thrilled when Ray recently offered to teach her how to paint .She has gone on to paint various animals, but painting birds in water is her favourite.

Tanya has a eye for detail and this is seen in her oil paintings.

'I love to concentrate on the fine detail in a painting and often start by painting the eye of the animal first. If I can get this correct then I feel as if it's watching me while I bring the rest of it to life. By the end of the painting I really feel close to the animal/bird that I have painted and find it hard to part with this new friend.’

Tanya is the winner of the Frozen Planet section in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2012, and also Commended in the Animals in their Environment section. She had a total of five paintings accepted to the finals.. This year she has had a total of 7 paintings accepted to the finals as well as one to be shown in the Mall Galleries in the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year Exhibiton in June.

The BBC Judges said ‘A confident but sensitive treatment of a swimming penguin makes this a very attractive image. The love of painting shines through – simply a lovely piece of work.’

Her paintings have been accepted in various exhibitions including the Bath Artists' exhibition 2011, and 2012, Autumn Exhibition The Royal West of England Academy 2011, and due to exhibit in Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Slimbridge November 2012. Her art work is also on show at the Jerram Gallery, Sherborne.

Tanya also loves to travel, freshly back from Africa and now off to colder places.
