Looe Cornwall. Busy Cornish Lugger Regatta Days. Looe Cornwall. Busy Cornish Lugger Regatta Days: Oil on panel 690 x 320mm The busy fishing and tourist town of Looe in Cornwall hosts a popular Looe Luggers Regatta every two years when the traditional two masted boats, many of which are restored and over one hundred years old, compete over two days. These luggers were the fishing vessels of their day. Because of their speed and manoeuvrability they were also used by smugglers in the 18th and 19th century. With up to fifty traditional vessels, with their rigging and colourful sails either, alongside, on the river, or in the bay, creating a spectacle that draws the crowds from far and wide.
