I started painting quite late in life about 15 years ago and have no formal qualification or teaching so my painting is very personal. I have learnt a lot from other local artists in Kent and still get a lot of satisfaction from attending classes in my local gallery (Smallhythe place) and various workshops.
I started painting in acrylics and still enjoy the occasional sortie into that media but mostly work in oils on canvas or board. Oils are great for me and give me the strong colour and variations I like.
Much of my painting is inspired by the impressionist style using bold brush strokes and strong colours and showing the changing qualities of light and time. Ordinary subject matter including movement when possible is a crucial element in the composition.
Most of my landscapes are inspired by the beautiful countryside around my home in The Weald of Kent, or by visits to individual and beautiful areas such as The Lake District, Cornwall and Southern Italy.
I occasionally work “en-plein air” but mostly work from personal observation and photographs.
