Paul Martin


was born in Yorkshire but was raised and educated in Pembrokeshire South West Wales where his family have lived for several generations. His childhood was spent in the stunning landscapes of the Pembrokeshire coastal peninsula, an area recognised for its outstanding beauty. This period has left an underlying impression on his appreciation for the effects of nature, natural history and wildlife.


After completing a foundation diploma at Carmarthen College of Art; highly recognised for its wildlife illustration course, Paul went on to complete a second year at Thurrock Technical College in Essex where he acquired more graphic skills.


In 1985 he graduated from Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Hons).


His first commissioned work was as an illustrator for London based publishers. His drawing skills led him in to the commercial world of story boarding for film and video and visualiser for Events, Exhibitions, and Museum and Heritage projects. His numerous commissions over a twenty year period include such distinguished clients as :- National Maritime Museum Greenwich, Millennium Dome 2000 Event, Woburn Elephant Sanctuary, Museum of Human Kind in South Africa, and the 2012 Olympics,


After a 20year career as a graphic designer in 2002 Paul decided to return to his illustrative roots and paint full time. His first major project was to paint ‘The Shipping Forecast’ which involved touring and painting the coastlines of his native Wales, Ireland and France. This was the theme for his debut exhibition of watercolours, held in the White room Gallery, Galway in 2006. After living on the shores of Lough Corrib for a year his follow up exhibition in 2007, at the White room Gallery, was a collection of watercolours themed on ’The Path of Least Resistance’. The path water takes from its source in the Connemarra Mountains through to Galway Bay, capturing the beauty of Galway City and County. Paul Moved back to Pembroke in 2009 to paint his familiar local landscapes, coastal scenery and wildlife and is exhibiting through out the year in several regional galleries.
