Hello, my name is Katie Essam and I live in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. I graduated in 2011 from the University of Hertfordshire with a BA Hons in Contemporary Applied Art, where I majored in mixed media jewellery.
Since graduatinf I have been struck with a passion for textiles. I am now a mix media textile artist.
I taught myself free hand machine embroidery, applique and many other textile techniques. Combining them I now make original frames, mix media textile art pieces, inspired by the beauty in everyday objects and vintage themes.
I love doing commissions for my customers. I take an image which is special to them, or a personal photo, of family, pets, houses (anything) and give them an original, talior made piece of textile art.
I sell most of my work at craft and art exhibitions, shows and fairs in Hertfordshire and am giving selling online a go too.
I am constantly experimenting and learning new skills and techniques, incorporating them into my pieces to add testure, depth and intrigue.
My favorite skill have to be free hand machine embroidery, crochet and tatting. I find them even more fascinating when they are combined.
Furthermore I teach free hand machine embroidery, applqiue and all the skill involved in making of my textile pieces, from my studio in Watford. I have had many lovely students, beginners and experienced come to do a course with me. All of them finished the course smiling, encouraged and empowered, having learnt the skills they nedded to allow them to make their own unique textile pieces.
