For me painting has always been an escape and a way to relax. I love using animals as my subjects as I like to try and develop characters for them that come across in my work. This is something I also try to do in my children’s books. I love to come up with names for my animals and always try to evoke a sense of humour in my work and give a feeling of the animals’ personalities and natures.

My recent inspiration has been from British wildlife and I love trudging the countryside with a camera. I always like to try and paint different animals to provide myself with a new challenge. As someone who always likes to vary what I do I also don’t like tying myself down to one medium. My paintings are mostly ink and watercolour but with a touch of acrylic, pencil or pastel thrown in depending on what I feel makes the most exciting and lively marks. I try and work as quickly as possible to evoke a sense of movement and life for my subjects and I find the eyes are a perfect way to make my paintings seem alive and as though they have a story to tell you.

Having been brought up in the west end of Newcastle all my life I decided to leave and experience somewhere new and therefore I ended up studying at University in Cumbria. Although I loved trudging through muddy fields of sheep and cows each morning it has to be said that I’ve missed the North East and I returned after graduating in June 2011. Now I settle for the occasional countryside trip and exploring nature in my artwork.
