To me, drawing is like breathing - it's just something I do. As far back as I can remember, I have had two great passions in life ? wildlife and the countryside and drawing and painting. Combining them gives me the greatest of pleasure.
A graduate of Glasgow School of Art,I now live in the heart of the Garioch area of Aberdeenshire. My studio sits among gorgeous surroundings, where I find inspiration for my wildlife artwork. I produce detailed pencil and pen and ink drawings, acrylics, watercolour and pastel originals, limited edition prints and illustrations and undertake special commissions. I also lecture widely, tutor weekly art classes and organize and lead painting days and weekends.
In recent years, I have been commissioned to illustrate several wildlife themed books. In 2008, I completed a project for publishers Penguin in the UK and Crown in the US. Producing 46 detailed pen and ink illustrations for Colin Tudge?s ?Consider the Birds? was a challenge but I thoroughly enjoyed it. You can see some of them here.
In the last year, I have begun a series of stylized acrylic paintings based on birds and mammals and I simply adore the freedom that the medium and style gives me to express movement. These paintings are all about colour and motion.
I love sketching ?in the field? and my involvement with the North East Raptor Study Group, (often sitting around for long periods of time monitoring), allows me close observation of birds of prey which I love for their strong looks and intricate feather colours and patterns. Owls are my all time favourite and I never tire of drawing them.
I am easy to please ? give me a pair of binoculars or a sketchbook ? or preferable both ? and I am happy.
