A contemporary realist painter, if a label will help, I often use a combination of found and personal photographic memorabilia as the starting point for my work. I reconstruct familiarly uncomfortable social interactions - to reveal the shared humanity in the cognitive isolation of individual experience; an autobiographical and generic commentary on suburban British life. The loose reworking of photographic images is intended as a deliberate point of access for the viewer; to prompt their own memories.
I build small wood panels, sometimes faced with copper, or linen supports for my oil paintings. The scale intensifies of the process, both of creating and observing, bringing an intimacy which is perhaps partly voyeuristic. And I employ traditional oil painting techniques, combining opaque, dry brush and glazes.
The spontaneity of plein air and life drawing makes up a valuable part of my work, pursuing both the seductive rhythm and flow of line and fleeting light. Daily drawing takes me healthily out of the studio. I am particularly drawn to Dutch genre painting and American Realism. Most recently, I have been inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth.
Since graduating from a PostGraduate Diploma in Fine Art (Byam Shaw) in 2010, I have exhibited regularly, including at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) , and The ING Discerning Eye. This Year I was Preselected for the New English Art CLub Open, and won the Club Prize at the Clifton Arts Club 107th Open.
I am particularly interested in group dynamics and social context of work, as well as the significance of landscape, and welcome commissions that engage with this.
