Helen Withington is a painter based in Andover Hampshire. She comes from artistic parents, including a father who is a former banknote designer at the Bank of England. Having obtained a BA Hons degree in Graphic Design: Illustration at the University of Plymouth, her narrative paintings have blossomed from a love of books and stories. Helen's painting, The Other Insomniac, was shortlisted for the Art Gemini Prize in 2018, where it was exhibited at the Menier Gallery in Southwark, London. She now focuses on commissions and painting for herself.

Bold contrasts appeal to Helen's work, as do rich, vibrant colours. She takes inspiration from the old masters like Rembrandt, and modern artists like David Hockney. Helen enjoys a range of mediums but presently is exploring oils in depth, understanding how transparent and opaque colours can work to her advantage.

She takes inspiration from all kinds of places. When travelling abroad, visiting London and even walking around town, Helen gathers reference in her head and through photography to bring back to her art room. A simple bedroom with an easel, desk, painting materials and various trinkets of inspiration, she sets to work creating vivid, often chiaroscuro artworks.
