I am an artist and designer born in Aberdeen, North East Scotland, where I continue to live and work. From an early age, I took an interest in the connection between people, plants, objects and the land around the shorelines of Aberdeen.
As a botanical artist, my practice analyses plants, habitats, and the people who engage with them. My work includes botanical, landscape, portrait, and abstract, sometimes adding mono-type printing to the final artwork. And all with a connection to the plant world.
Initially, I depicted identifiable plants in a scientific context; however, as time passed, I realised that I enjoy connecting with plants in their environment, which is key to my practice. Through this process, I create landscape drawings and photograph objects and their locations for use in the studio.
Recently, I have worked from my studio, drawing and painting portraits of people connected to plants and the land. I have also utilised digital microscopy images to create abstract drawings and mono-printed patterns and textures obtained from parts of the plant material, capturing an immediate response through mono-printing in oils on Perspex or wood. Combining these methods and processes has added to my diverse mix of artworks, inspired from childhood when exploring the shores of Aberdeen collecting sea thrift and grasses.
