I started painting only recently and relatively late in life aged 45,i have never had any formal (or indeed informal!) training though my father is an accomplished artist so i must have inherited something useful!.I am also acutely colourblind which i am reliably told by more than one artist makes me bolder with colours than they are.I would probably have never contemplated painting at all had i not inherited a large quantity of art materials which i needed to find a use for!
My work has been described as colourful and slightly larger than life, but still incorporating a lot of detail.I don't aim for absolute photo realism as i like my paintings to look like paintings.
I have always liked art particularly works by the pierhead artists of old who provide inspiration for much of my work.My first love is painting Scottish fishing boats and trawlers, preserving these lovely historic vessels on canvas many of which have been sadly decommisioned or scrapped in recent years. As a proud Yorkshireman my native county also provides inspiration,so expect Scarbourough and Filey scenes to appear on my portfolio in the future.
I don't confine myself purely to boats and harbour scenes.I also dip into the world of motorsport art and i have produced commission work primarily of an equine nature.
I work mainly in acrylic on canvas as the end product has such a substantial feel to it.That said i do work in watercolour, gouache and pencil too on occasions.
