The Australian yabby is a creature of contradictions: both vulnerable and defiant, delicate and armoured. In this pastel study I was drawn less to scientific accuracy and more to character. The raised claws suggest a small creature confronting a much larger world, relying on courage rather than size.
Layers of cool blues, violets and soft earth tones were used to capture the shimmering colours. The composition places the viewer directly in the yabby’s path, creating a moment of encounter between observer and observed as he emerges from the billabong.
