After studying fine art at Leeds Barbara has had a long career as an artist/illustrator,designer and art tutor. As an illustrator she has worked for many prestigious clients ,including B.B.C. books, illustrating 'The living garden' by Geoff Hamilton, 'Mary Berry cookbooks' and 'The big food and drink book. all best sellers. In the late 90's Barbara gave up working alone to do set painting and design, leading to working at the famous Jim Henson's 'Creature shop' where she did painting and artworking for many film projects and advertising campaigns . Needing more time at home to care for an elderly mother Barbara became an art and design tutor and returned albeit part time to her own art.
Her abstract work is influenced by the geology of the British coastline and she is trying to capture her emotional respose to that environment especially of the rocks laid down over millions of years then eroded to expose the layering of time. This layering and re-shaping of the landscape influence the way Barbara works, contructing and de-constucting the surface of her paintings, sometimes taking weeks to complete a piece. Living in Dorset when younger inspired her to start her Jurassic series. Between the blocks of time spent on her abstract work, Barbara works in oils, acrylic and watercolour. Many of thes works are figurative and when asked about the two very different ways of working she says that she enjoys both, they are different facets of her as a person and she enjoys both.
