About this artwork

Balloon Dog explores light, surface and perception through the unexpected delicacy of a simple, decorative object. Drawn entirely in graphite, the work transforms the playful form of a balloon dog into a study of luminosity, volume and material illusion.

The balloon’s semi-opaque rubber material partially conceals what lies beyond its surface. Light is reflected, absorbed and softly diffused through the inflated form, creating subtle tonal transitions alongside sharper highlights and reflections. Graphite allows these contrasting optical qualities to emerge from a monochrome palette, turning an object associated with colour and popular culture into an intricate study of light.

The drawing invites the viewer to look beyond the familiarity of the subject and consider how light alone can make a simple, decorative object appear solid, luminous and unexpectedly precious.
