I often visit Rockside Farm on Islay and paint the trekking ponies. This little grey pony is my favourite model, and I don't even know his name. Between treks, the ponies are tethered, and the golden sand is reflected on the underside of the animal, along with the tail caught in the wind. I never start by drawing on the canvas with anything except my brushes, blocking in shapes, colours and tones. I believe, where animals are concerned, that outlines create boundaries with edges which restrict the visual implication of form thus limiting that all important illusion of life itself.
