‘Art as Social Commentary.’
For a year 10 school art class last year, I created ‘Disconnected’, a sculpture in the iconic, rough-hewn style of Giacometti depicting a hooded youth, a Nike trainer on one foot , an Adidas on his other, signifying how he’s already a slave to brand names.
Here, we see two pairs of arms - one pair of hands glued feverishly to the screen of his phone, whilst the others are, paradoxically, clutched to his head in alienated, angst-ridden Edvard Munchian ‘Scream’-like despair.
To me, Giacometti’s angst-ridden, war-torn, energetic visceral style perfectly reflects the depressing statistic that ‘Generation Alpha’ (those born between c. 2010 - 2024) children are ironically, both the most digitally connected, yet real-world disconnected and depressed generation in history.
