ENIGMATIC, ETHEREAL PAINTINGS THAT REIMAGINE ARCHITECTURE, THE NATURAL WORLD, AND MAN-MADE ARTEFACTS

My paintings develop from sketches and photographs taken on location, blending imagination and inspiration from architecture, archaeology, and man-made structures. From my beautiful studio space at Arnup Studios, York, I create and teach art, sharing my collections and prints. I exhibit both solo and collaboratively across the UK and locally, in galleries, open studios, art fairs and art cafes.
My oil paintings are created using fine brushes and gentle strokes, featuring layered colours for unique tonal variations. This technique showcases the interplay of shapes and colours, concentrating on the subject's intrinsic characteristics. The compositions aim to capture the essence of time and place, blending noticeable and subtle imagery to provide a distinctive quality. Local landmarks are depicted from various angles, offering different perspectives and encouraging viewers to explore their features anew.
With its use of diverse colours and compositions, watercolour techniques foster unique interactions between colour and shape, producing art that feels both spontaneous and carefully designed. This method extends the artwork beyond literal interpretations. My selection of subjects enables the exploration of detailed aspects found in both natural and artificial environments.
When working with watercolours, I appreciate their fluidity and unpredictability. The use of varied brushes enables the creation of broad washes and intricate details, facilitating natural colour blending. My technique is driven by an intuitive understanding of light and shadow. Gradually building up layers contributes to the depth and richness of the painting.
