To The Lighthouse is painted in acrylics on stretched 300gsm linen. The subject matter is a lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia and was painted from various reference photos in the public domain. To avoid flatness in the painting, the linen has been allowed to show through in places as it adds textural and colour interest. For this piece I used a 1-inch flat brush, a number 12 round brush, and a smaller detail brush for the cracks in the rocks. I used raw Sienna, burnt umber, cobalt blue, a little Payne's grey, and a smidgen of cadmium red to warm the sky a little. The proportions of the lighthouse have been extended a little vertically to create sense of the importance of lighthouses rather than just coastal beauty spots, as lighthouse are extremely important to the safe navigation of the seas even today. At the time of photographing, the painting is unvarnished to prevent glare during photography. The painting will be varnished and will be unframed. The work will also be signed by myself.
